What Is An American Cockroach?

The American cockroach is the largest cockroach species found in the United States, and one of the most common in South Florida homes and businesses. Despite the name, UF/IFAS Featured Creatures notes the species likely originated in Africa and was introduced to the Americas centuries ago. It thrives in warm, humid climates like Florida’s, which is why it is sometimes called the “palmetto bug.”

What does the American Cockroach in South Florida look like?

The American cockroach is reddish-brown with a pale yellow band around the edge of the shield behind its head, and it is notably larger than the other cockroach species found in South Florida homes. Adults can reach 1.5 to 2 inches long, with long antennae and fully developed wings on both males and females. Its size alone is often what leads homeowners to call it a “palmetto bug” rather than a typical roach.

Biology of the American Cockroach

American cockroaches develop through gradual metamorphosis, and a female can produce dozens of egg cases over her lifetime, each containing about 14 to 16 eggs. Nymphs take six months to over a year to reach adulthood depending on temperature and food availability. Adults can live up to two years, longer than most household cockroach species, which is part of why established infestations are difficult to eliminate without professional treatment.

Habits of American Cockroaches in South Florida

American cockroaches prefer dark, warm, moist environments and are most often found in basements, crawl spaces, sewers, storm drains, and around plumbing. In South Florida homes without basements, they commonly enter through sewer lines, floor drains, and gaps around pipes, and are frequently seen in garages, laundry rooms, and outdoor landscaping mulch. They are strong fliers in warm weather and often move between outdoor harborage and structures at night.

5 Ways To Prevent American Cockroaches in South Florida Homes

Seal Sewer & Drain Openings:

American cockroaches commonly enter through floor drains and sewer connections. Ensure drain covers fit tightly and check for gaps around pipe penetrations.

Reduce Moisture Around The Foundation:

Fix leaking spigots, air conditioner condensation lines, and irrigation overspray that keeps soil near the foundation damp.

Manage Mulch & Debris:

Keep mulch beds pulled back from the foundation and remove leaf litter and woodpiles, which provide outdoor harborage close to the home.

Seal Entry Points:

Caulk gaps around utility lines, weatherstrip garage doors, and repair damaged screens and vents.

Keep Garages & Storage Areas Clean:

Reduce clutter and standing water in garages, sheds, and laundry rooms where these roaches often hide.
