This is the most common one in South Florida, and it is the one that most reliably backfires.
Seeing a line of ants on the counter and reaching for spray is a completely natural response. The trail dies within minutes and the counter is clear. It looks like it worked.
What happened underneath is different. UF/IFAS documents ghost ants as operating across distributed nesting sites in wall voids, soil, potted plants, and mulch beds rather than a single colony. Ghost ants have multiple queens spread across those sites, and when chemical stress hits the colony it fragments defensively. Queens and workers scatter and establish additional satellite nests.
A property with four nesting sites before spraying can have eight or ten after a few rounds. The visible trail dies. The colony grows. A new trail appears in a different room a few weeks later, and the cycle repeats with a larger population each time.
Pharaoh ants do the same thing, which is why many multi-unit buildings prohibit tenant self-treatment entirely. Spraying in one apartment pushes the colony through shared wall cavities into the neighbors.

Leave the trail alone and use bait. Workers carry bait back through the normal food-sharing network and it reaches the queens in every connected nest, which contracts the colony rather than splitting it. Foggers feel thorough. You set them off, leave for a few hours, come back to a treated house. The logic is sound and the result is not.
Foggers release product into open air. German cockroaches do not live in open air. They live inside appliance motor housings, cabinet hinges, wall voids, and plumbing chase areas, and the fog does not penetrate any of it.
Worse, the product acts as a repellent at the edges of those harborage spaces. Roaches move deeper into the wall rather than dying, which spreads the population further into the structure and makes subsequent bait placement harder.
UF/IFAS documents German cockroach populations as sustained by protected harborage and recommends targeted bait placement rather than broadcast application. EPA guidance on bed bugs makes the same point about foggers failing to reach cracks and crevices, and the mechanism is identical.
Foggers also deposit product on kitchen counters and food preparation surfaces, which is exposure without benefit.

Gel bait placed directly into harborage locations, combined with a growth regulator that prevents nymphs from reaching reproductive age. Given how quickly German cockroaches reproduce, interrupting the breeding cycle matters more than killing visible adults.

Reverse the order. The cavity gets treated, activity is confirmed ended, and only then does the opening get closed so the next generation cannot use it.
This one wastes money you already spent.
A technician applies a non-repellent product to the perimeter and to interior harborage areas. The design depends on insects walking across treated surfaces and carrying the material back to the colony. Non-repellent means the insects do not avoid it, which is the entire point.
Then a homeowner sees an ant two days later and sprays it with a consumer product. Consumer sprays are typically repellent by design, because visible knockdown is what sells them. That repellency now sits on top of the professional treatment and drives insects away from the treated zone before they can carry anything back.
The professional treatment stops working as intended, and the reason is invisible.
Aggressive cleaning of treated surfaces does the same thing. Mopping the baseboards or scrubbing the perimeter within a couple of days of service removes the product from where it needs to remain.

If activity concerns you after a service visit, call for re-service rather than spraying. At any reputable company that is free and typically happens within 24 to 48 hours. Normal light cleaning is fine, but hold off on scrubbing treated areas.
Every part of this instinct is understandable and the result is temporary.
Small fuzzy flies hovering near a sink suggest something in the drain, and bleach seems like the answer. It goes down, the flies disappear for a few days, and then they come back.
The flies breed in the organic biofilm coating the inside of the pipe. Larvae are physically attached to that layer. Bleach runs through too quickly to dissolve biofilm and does not reach the larvae embedded in it. It kills what it directly contacts and leaves the breeding surface intact.
Boiling water has the same problem. So does spraying the flies you can see, since the population producing them is inside the pipe.

Mechanically brush the drain to remove the biofilm, then use an enzyme or bacterial drain treatment that digests the organic layer over repeated applications. Bleach and enzymes should never be combined.

UF/IFAS recommends year-round integrated pest management in Florida because the climate supports continuous development for most residential species. In colder states a partially successful DIY effort gets help from the first hard freeze. Nothing here interrupts the population, so a colony that fragmented in June is still expanding in December.

The species most likely to be sprayed is also the species that responds worst to spraying. That is an unfortunate combination and it explains a large share of the repeat ant calls across the region.

Drain biofilm, wall void moisture, and cockroach harborage all persist year-round rather than drying out seasonally.
