Can ticks live in my yard if it’s not near woods?

Yes. Ticks do not need woods. They need shade, moisture, and something to feed on, and a suburban yard in Palm Beach County or the Treasure Coast can supply all three without a tree line anywhere in sight. The woods association comes from the northeastern United States, where deer tick populations really are tied to forested habitat and leaf litter. That model gets repeated in national articles and it does not transfer cleanly to South Florida.

One species here does not need outdoor habitat at all. The brown dog tick can complete its entire life cycle indoors, in a house with no yard, no woods, and no wildlife. It arrives on a dog and stays.

If you have shade, ground cover, and either pets or wildlife crossing the property, ticks are possible regardless of what is or is not next door.

The short version

Ticks need protection from drying out more than they need trees. Shaded ground cover, dense shrubs, tall grass, mulch beds, and leaf accumulation all hold enough humidity to support them.

UF/IFAS documents the Lone Star tick as established throughout Florida in wooded, brushy, and transitional habitat. Transitional habitat is the operative phrase, and a landscaped suburban yard qualifies.



The brown dog tick is the exception that undercuts the whole woods question. It is adapted to human structures and kennels, survives indoors, and is the tick most commonly found in Florida homes.


Hosts matter more than habitat type. Dogs, cats that go outside, raccoons, opossums, squirrels, rats, and birds all carry ticks onto properties with no woods nearby.

What ticks actually need

This is the constraint that governs everything else. Ticks lose moisture through their bodies and die when they cannot recover it. Shade and ground-level humidity are what they are seeking, and trees are only one of many ways to get that.

Most ticks climb vegetation and wait with their front legs extended, a behavior called questing. They need something to climb: tall grass, ground cover, low shrubs, or the edge of a landscape bed. Mowed turf alone is poor tick habitat.

No hosts, no population. Dogs are the most common in a residential setting, followed by outdoor cats and the wildlife that crosses nearly every South Florida property at night.

Ivy, jasmine, and similar plantings hold humidity at ground level and give ticks both shelter and something to climb.

Mulch holds moisture, especially where irrigation reaches it. Beds along the north or east side of the house that stay shaded are the most productive.

The brown dog tick problem

This species deserves its own discussion because it breaks the habitat conversation entirely. The brown dog tick is adapted to living with dogs and with human structures. It can complete its full life cycle indoors, and an established infestation in a house does not require a yard at all. Signs look different from what people expect. Ticks appear along baseboards, in wall cracks, behind furniture, in crevices around dog bedding, and sometimes climbing walls. Homeowners frequently find them in rooms with no obvious connection to the outdoors.

An infestation typically starts when a dog brings in an engorged female that drops off and lays eggs indoors. The population builds from there.

If you are finding ticks inside a home with no woods and no obvious outdoor source, this species is the likely explanation, and treatment addresses the structure rather than the landscape.

What homeowners can check and change

Keep grass mowed, particularly the edges and corners a mower usually skips. Thin dense ground cover in shaded areas, or replace it in the zones where pets and people spend time. Trim shrubs so the base is visible and air moves through, which lowers humidity in the interior. Reduce mulch depth in shaded beds and pull it back from where pets rest.

Create a gravel or hardscape break between the lawn and any brushy or overgrown edge. Clear leaf accumulation along fence lines and behind structures.

Keep pets on veterinary tick prevention year-round, which matters more in Florida than in states with a hard winter.

Check dogs after they have been in landscape beds or tall grass, focusing on ears, neck, armpits, and between toes.

Secure trash and remove fallen fruit to reduce wildlife traffic.

When professional treatment makes sense

Occasional ticks on a dog after a walk in a preserve or park is not a yard problem. Repeated ticks found on pets that only use your yard indicates an established property population.

Ticks found indoors, especially along baseboards or walls, points toward brown dog tick and warrants prompt attention since indoor populations grow. Properties adjacent to preserve land or with heavy wildlife traffic often need seasonal treatment regardless of habitat modification, since the source is off-property.

Yard treatment targets the transitional zones where ticks concentrate rather than broadcasting across open lawn. Combined with habitat modification and veterinary prevention on pets, that is what changes the outcome. Treatment alone, with dense shaded ground cover left in place and pets unprotected, produces short-lived results.
