Our technicians get this question constantly. Why do ghost ants keep coming back after I spray them?
The pattern behind it is always the same. You saw a trail on the counter, sprayed it, and watched the ants die within a minute. The counter was clear and it looked like it worked. Two weeks later there is a new trail in the bathroom. You spray that one too. A few weeks after that, one appears near the dishwasher.
Each round feels like progress and the problem keeps getting broader. That is not bad luck, and it is not a sign the product was weak. It is the predictable result of what spraying does to this particular species.
What matters here
Ghost ant colonies have multiple queens spread across many small nesting sites rather than one central nest.
Under chemical stress, those colonies fragment defensively. Queens and workers scatter and establish additional satellite nests, which is a process called budding.
The trail dies and the colony expands. A property with four nesting sites can have eight or ten after a few rounds of spray.
Bait does the opposite. Workers carry it back through the food-sharing network and it reaches queens across connected nests, contracting the colony rather than splitting it.
Most people picture an ant colony as one nest with one queen. Kill the queen, problem over.
Ghost ants do not work that way. UF/IFAS documents ghost ants as operating across distributed nesting sites in wall voids, soil, potted plants, and mulch beds rather than a single location, with multiple reproductive queens across those sites.
A single connected colony might occupy the void behind your kitchen backsplash, a section of soil under the patio slab, two potted plants on the lanai, and a strip of mulch along the foundation. Those are not separate colonies competing with each other. They share workers, food, and chemical signals.
Which means the trail you sprayed was one supply line out of many.
Colonies with this structure have a defensive response to threat, and it is the opposite of what you want.
When workers die suddenly in a concentrated area, the colony reads it as danger to that location. Queens and groups of workers relocate away from the disturbance and establish new nesting sites, which is budding.
The result is measurable. Fewer ants in the room you sprayed, more nesting sites across the property, and a colony that is now harder to reach because it is spread across more locations.
Repellent products make it worse in a second way. Most consumer sprays are designed to repel, because visible knockdown and ants avoiding a treated line is what sells the product. That repellency actively pushes the colony outward rather than letting anything reach it.
Ghost ants share food, and that is the vulnerability.
Foraging workers carry liquid food back to the nest and distribute it to other workers, larvae, and queens through a process called trophallaxis. A slow-acting bait moves through that same network.
The timing is deliberate. A bait that killed a worker on contact would never reach the nest, so effective bait is slow enough that the worker gets home and shares it first. Which is why the trail does not disappear immediately after professional treatment, and why seeing ants for several days afterward is a sign the process is working rather than failing.
Because the network connects nesting sites, bait taken from one location reaches queens in others. That contracts the colony instead of splitting it.
Non-repellent products.
Ants walk across treated surfaces without avoiding them and carry material back to the colony. The absence of visible knockdown is the point. Anything that makes ants avoid a surface prevents transfer.
Bait matched to what the colony wants.
Ghost ants are strongly attracted to sugars but shift toward protein at certain points in the colony cycle. Bait that does not match current preference gets ignored, which is one reason store-bought bait sometimes appears to do nothing.
Exterior treatment where the colony actually lives.
Interior trails are supply lines from nests that are frequently outdoors. Treating only what you see inside leaves the nesting sites untouched.
Do not spray trails. That is the single change with the largest effect.
Do not clean a trail away with vinegar or bleach before a technician arrives. The trail is diagnostic information, showing where they enter and which direction they travel.
Do not spray over professional bait placements. Consumer spray is repellent and will drive ants away from the bait before they can carry it home, which cancels the treatment you paid for. Our guide on DIY pest control mistakes covers this and four others.
Do not expect immediate results. Bait needs several days to move through the network, and that delay is built into how it works.
Treatment addresses the colony. These conditions determine whether a new one moves in.
Ghost ants nest readily in potted plant soil, so plants on a lanai or by an entry door are frequent nesting sites. Irrigation keeping mulch and landscape beds permanently damp supports them, since they prefer moist conditions. Mulch piled against the foundation gives them a nesting site directly against the structure.

Indoors, standing water in sinks and available food residue matter less than most people assume, though they do concentrate activity in specific rooms.
Two other species get confused with them and one needs a different approach.
Ghost ants are roughly 1.5 millimeters with a dark head and thorax against a pale, almost translucent abdomen and legs. Trails are thin and single-file along grout lines and countertop edges.
White-footed ants are larger, entirely dark except for pale feet, and form noticeably wider trails. They do not share food the way ghost ants do, so conventional bait is less effective and the treatment differs.
Carpenter ants are much larger, usually seen individually rather than in trails, and their presence generally means moisture-damaged wood. Our ant identification guide covers all three side by side.
