Do dampwood termites live in Florida?

One of our technicians found dampwood termites on a job this week. In the Pacific Northwest that would be routine. In South Florida it is uncommon enough to be worth writing about. Dampwood termites do occur in Florida, primarily in the genus Neotermes, but they are not among the species driving structural termite damage here. The reason is their habitat requirement. They need wood that is genuinely saturated or already decaying, and sound dry framing will not support them. That makes the find useful in a diagnostic sense. Dampwood termites in a structure mean water had been reaching that wood for a long time, and the insects arrived after the damage had already started. If you found termites in a wet window frame, a soft section of fascia, or the base of a deck post, dampwood is one of four possibilities. The others are subterranean termites, drywood termites, and carpenter ants, which are not termites at all.

The short version

Dampwood termites in the genus Neotermes are documented in Florida, primarily in coastal and southern portions of the state, and they nest in wood with high moisture content. They are not among the species driving structural termite damage here.

UF/IFAS documents subterranean termites, including the invasive Formosan and Asian subterranean species, as the primary structural termite threat in South Florida, alongside drywood termites.

Subterranean termites are strongly associated with moisture and are frequently found in exactly the wet wood people assume must mean dampwood termites.

Carpenter ants also nest in moisture-damaged wood, and homeowners confuse them with termites regularly. They are a different order of insect requiring a different treatment.

What dampwood termites actually are

Dampwood termites are larger than the other termite groups, with soldiers and reproductives noticeably bigger than their subterranean or drywood counterparts. They require wood with high moisture content and do not build the soil tunnels subterranean species depend on.

They nest directly in the wood they consume, and unlike drywood termites they do not produce the distinctive hexagonal fecal pellets, since the moisture content of their food means waste is not compacted the same way.

Their habitat requirement is also the reason they are uncommon in structures. Sound, dry framing does not support them. Wood has to be substantially decayed or persistently saturated first.

In Florida, that limits them largely to stumps, fallen logs, and wood in direct prolonged contact with wet ground.

What is more likely in your wet wood

Subterranean termites.

This is the most common answer, and the moisture association confuses people. Subterranean termites need moisture and are drawn to damp wood, so finding them in a soft window frame or wet sill plate is ordinary rather than surprising. The identifying signs are mud tubes on foundations or framing, and swarmer wings shed near windows after warm humid evenings.

Drywood termites.

Less tied to moisture but present throughout South Florida. The clearest sign is frass: small, uniform, hexagonal pellets resembling coarse sand, accumulating below the infested wood. Our Delray Beach termite guide covers how both groups behave in this region.

Carpenter ants.

Not termites. They excavate wood for nesting rather than eating it, and they strongly prefer wood already softened by moisture. Their frass is coarse and fibrous like pencil shavings and contains recognizable insect parts, including discarded wings and leg segments. Carpenter ants.

Wood-decay fungi with no insect involvement at all. Persistently wet wood softens and crumbles on its own. Homeowners sometimes attribute that damage to insects that were never present.

How to tell them apart

Look at the frass.

Small uniform hexagonal pellets mean drywood termites. Coarse fibrous material with insect parts mixed in means carpenter ants. Subterranean termites produce no visible frass, since they pack their galleries with soil and fecal material instead.

Look for mud tubes.

Pencil-width earthen tubes on foundation walls, piers, or framing mean subterranean termites. No other insect on this list builds them.

Look at the insect itself.

Termites have a straight body with no waist, straight bead-like antennae, and, when winged, four wings of roughly equal length that shed easily. Carpenter ants have a pinched waist, elbowed antennae, and front wings longer than the rear pair.

Look at the gallery walls.

Carpenter ant galleries are smooth and clean, almost sanded, because they cut through wood without consuming it. Termite galleries are rougher and often contain soil or debris.

Look at size.

If the soldiers and reproductives are noticeably larger than typical termites and the wood is severely decayed and ground-contacting, dampwood termites become worth considering.

Why the water damage matters more than the species

Every insect on this list is telling you the same thing about your house.


They are all drawn to wood that moisture has already compromised. Finding any of them means water has been reaching that wood for a while, and the water problem is generally the more expensive one.


Common sources behind moisture-damaged structural wood in South Florida include failed caulking around windows on the weather-facing side, gutters overflowing onto fascia, roof leaks that stay hidden longer in homes with foam insulation concealing the deck, slow plumbing leaks behind bathroom walls, irrigation spraying the structure, and wood in direct ground contact where mulch has been piled against it.


Treating the insects without correcting the water leaves the wood attractive to whatever comes next, and the decay continues on its own regardless.

What treatment looks like for each

Subterranean termites.

Liquid soil barrier treatment, bait station monitoring around the perimeter, or a combination. UF/IFAS includes bait station monitoring as a core component of integrated termite management in Florida. Correcting the moisture source is part of the work rather than separate from it.

Localized spot treatment where the infestation is confined to a specific area, or whole-structure fumigation when the scope requires it. A reliable company assesses whether spot treatment is sufficient before recommending fumigation.

Carpenter ants.

Locating and treating the nest, which may be a satellite nest indoors with a parent colony in a nearby tree, combined with finding the moisture source.

Rare enough in Florida structures that treatment centers on removing or replacing the severely decayed wood and eliminating the water keeping it saturated. The conditions supporting them are the actual problem.

Something else entirely.

Persistent unexplained itching warrants a physician rather than an exterminator.

When to call

Any termite evidence warrants inspection. Mud tubes, swarmer wings on a windowsill, frass accumulating below trim, or wood that sounds hollow when tapped.

Soft or crumbling wood with no visible insects still warrants attention, since decay weakens structural members on its own and often conceals activity.

Correct species identification determines the treatment, and getting it wrong wastes months. A company that quotes treatment without inspecting is guessing at which of four possibilities it is dealing with.

No. Antlion larvae stay buried in their pits and the adults feed on nectar. Neither stage poses any risk to people, pets, or structures.
Only if a tube is somewhere inconvenient, like directly above a doorway. Mud daubers are solitary, rarely defensive, and provision their nests with spiders. Tubes in sheltered out-of-the-way locations are worth leaving.
Not for the species that cause structural damage or health risk. Predators reduce populations of plant pests and some nuisance insects, but they do not resolve termite, mosquito, rodent, or German cockroach problems.
