UF/IFAS documents that a single female German cockroach can produce up to 400 offspring over her lifetime, with multiple generations active simultaneously inside an infested home. That figure is the reason German cockroach populations appear to explode rather than grow gradually.
German cockroach females carry their egg capsule until just before hatching, which protects the eggs from predators, insecticide contact, and dehydration. Most other cockroach species deposit and abandon their egg capsules, and the survival rate reflects that difference.
South Florida provides no seasonal reset. UF/IFAS notes that Florida’s warm temperatures and high humidity support continuous cockroach development year-round, unlike northern climates where cold weather slows or halts breeding cycles for several months annually.
Warmth accelerates development directly. The same German cockroach population that takes several months to mature in a cool basement can complete the cycle in roughly six to eight weeks inside a South Florida home with air conditioning and consistent indoor temperatures.

A mated female produces a capsule holding roughly 30 to 40 eggs. She carries it attached to her abdomen for the entire incubation period rather than depositing it somewhere. Anything that kills the mother before hatching also kills the capsule, which is precisely why bait-based treatment outperforms contact sprays against this species.

The capsule releases nymphs shortly before or immediately after the female drops it. Thirty to forty nymphs emerge from a single capsule and begin foraging within hours.

Nymphs pass through several molts before reaching adulthood. In South Florida's indoor conditions, the process typically runs six to twelve weeks depending on temperature, moisture, and available food.

A female produces several capsules across her adult life. Each one adds another 30 to 40 individuals to the population, and the earliest nymphs reach reproductive maturity while she is still producing capsules.
Multiply the timeline across overlapping generations and the pattern makes sense.
A single mated female arrives in a grocery bag or a cardboard delivery box. Six weeks later, her first capsule has hatched and roughly 35 nymphs are developing in the wall void behind your dishwasher. Twelve weeks in, those nymphs are reaching adulthood while the original female produces additional capsules. By week sixteen, multiple females are producing capsules simultaneously.
Nothing about the first two months looks like an infestation from the homeowner’s perspective. Nymphs stay hidden, populations remain small, and sightings are rare enough to dismiss. The visible jump happens when the population outgrows available harborage space and individuals start appearing in the open during daylight hours.

Each week of delay against a German cockroach population means another cohort of nymphs progressing toward reproductive age. A problem addressed at week six is substantially smaller than the same problem addressed at week sixteen.

Gel bait placed into harborage locations reaches the population where it actually lives, including gravid females carrying capsules. UF/IFAS recommends targeted bait placement combined with growth regulators that prevent nymphs from reaching reproductive maturity.


Nymphs hatching from capsules present at the time of initial treatment emerge afterward. Treatment plans that include follow-up visits over several weeks account for that, which is why single-visit approaches frequently fail.
