Rats in Florida: every species, where they live, and what they damage

Something is moving in the attic after dark. You have narrowed it down to a rodent, and now you want to know what kind, because the internet has told you that matters.

It does. Three rat species live in Florida, and they occupy completely different parts of a property. One lives overhead in your attic and travels through tree canopy. One stays low in burrows near your foundation. The third is a native woodland species most homeowners will never encounter indoors. The species determines where the traps go, where the entry points are, and what the exclusion work needs to cover.

Slender build, six to eight inches of body length, with a tail longer than the body. Large ears and prominent eyes. Fur ranges from brown to nearly black with a lighter underside. Pointed snout.

Where they live.

Overhead. Attics, soffit voids, ceiling cavities, palm crowns, and dense tree canopy. Excellent climbers that travel along branches, fence tops, and utility wires between properties.

How they get in.

Through the roofline almost exclusively. Overhanging tree branches within three feet of the roof provide the jump. Once on the roof, gaps in soffit panels, unsealed utility penetrations, plumbing vent gaps, and lifted roof tiles all provide entry.

What they damage.

Gnawed electrical wiring, chewed PVC plumbing, shredded insulation used for nesting, and contaminated attic space from droppings and urine. Damage accumulates for weeks before most homeowners notice the noise.

Norway rat

How to tell which species you have without seeing it

Most homeowners never get a clear look. These indicators work without visual confirmation.

Location of the sound.

Overhead in the ceiling or attic points to roof rats. Along baseboards, beneath floors, or in the garage at ground level points to Norway rats.

Droppings shape and location.

Roof rat droppings are roughly half an inch, spindle-shaped with pointed ends, and accumulate along ceiling joists and attic corners. Norway rat droppings are larger at three quarters of an inch, capsule-shaped with blunt ends, and appear along ground-level walls and in burrow entrances.

Entry point locations.
