The project involves releasing male mosquitoes infected with Wolbachia, a naturally occurring bacterium found in roughly 60 percent of all insect species worldwide. The males do not bite. When Wolbachia-infected males mate with wild Aedes aegypti females, the eggs do not hatch. The population declines over time without pesticides, genetic modification, or any risk to humans or pets.
This is not a new or untested concept. Wolbachia-based mosquito suppression has been researched for over a decade and field-tested in multiple countries including the United States, Australia, Indonesia, and Brazil. The EPA has previously registered Wolbachia-based mosquito suppression as a biopesticide, recognizing its safety profile for humans, animals, and the environment.
The release targets Aedes aegypti, the yellow fever mosquito responsible for transmitting dengue, Zika, and chikungunya in South Florida. It does not target or affect any other mosquito species. The dozens of other mosquito species biting you in your backyard are unaffected by this program.
Wolbachia mosquito releases do not replace residential mosquito control. They are a population-level suppression tool that reduces Aedes aegypti numbers over time in the release area. Your property-level mosquito pressure from multiple species still requires the same barrier treatment, source reduction, and breeding site management it always has.
The program, developed by Verily (the life sciences division of Alphabet, Google’s parent company) through their Debug Project, breeds male Aedes aegypti mosquitoes infected with a specific Wolbachia strain in a controlled facility.
Only males are released. Male mosquitoes do not bite. They feed on nectar. They have no mechanism to transmit disease or Wolbachia to humans, pets, or wildlife. The released males seek out wild Aedes aegypti females, mate with them, and the eggs fail to develop. Over multiple release cycles, the wild Aedes aegypti population in the target area declines.
The mosquitoes are not genetically modified. No genes are added, removed, or altered. The Wolbachia bacterium is introduced into the mosquito colony through microinjection, and subsequent generations carry it naturally through maternal inheritance.
Aedes aegypti is the primary vector for dengue, Zika, chikungunya, and yellow fever in the Western Hemisphere. It is an invasive species in Florida, originally from Africa, that breeds almost exclusively in small containers of standing water in residential areas.
UF/IFAS documents Aedes aegypti as established across South Florida, with residential container habitat as its dominant breeding site. The species is exceptionally difficult to control with conventional methods because it breeds in tiny water volumes (a bottle cap holds enough water), bites during daylight hours, and has developed resistance to many common insecticides.
Wolbachia-based suppression targets Aedes aegypti without affecting the dozens of other mosquito species present in South Florida. Culex mosquitoes, Aedes albopictus (Asian tiger mosquito), and the native species that breed in marshes, canals, and larger water bodies are not affected by the release.

The release suppresses one species, Aedes aegypti, in the target area over time. The mosquitoes biting you at dusk on your Boca Raton patio are likely Culex species from the nearest standing water or canal, not Aedes aegypti. Multiple species contribute to residential mosquito pressure in Palm Beach County and the Treasure Coast.

Barrier treatments targeting the vegetation where adult mosquitoes rest, source reduction eliminating breeding sites on your property, and bromeliad management all remain necessary regardless of whether Wolbachia releases occur in your area.

The released mosquitoes are male and do not bite. Wolbachia is not transmissible to humans, dogs, cats, or any non-insect species. The bacterium cannot survive outside insect cells.

No genes are altered. Wolbachia is a naturally occurring bacterium introduced into a mosquito colony through established laboratory techniques. The distinction matters because the regulatory pathway and risk profile for Wolbachia-based suppression are fundamentally different from genetic modification approaches.

Every planter saucer, bucket, gutter, tarp fold, and container holding water is a breeding site for multiple mosquito species including Aedes aegypti.
