Bugs in your South Florida yard you should leave alone

One of our technicians photographed an antlion in the field last week, which is rarer than it sounds. Antlions spend nearly their entire larval stage buried in soil, and most people who have seen their handiwork have no idea what made it.

If you have small conical pits in dry sandy soil around your home, usually tucked under an eave or beside a foundation where rain does not reach, those are antlion traps. Each pit has a larva buried at the bottom with only its jaws exposed. An ant that wanders onto the loose sand rim slides down, and the larva erupts out of the soil to take it. If the ant tries to climb out, the larva flicks sand upward to knock it back down.

They are also called doodlebugs, because moving one leaves a winding squiggle in the sand.

Nothing about that requires treatment. Antlions eat ants, they are harmless to people, and the pits are a sign the sandy area around your home is doing something useful.

Plenty of what lives in a South Florida yard falls into the same category.

Before we get into it

Pest control is not about eliminating insects from a property. It is about managing the specific species causing damage, health risk, or genuine nuisance, and leaving the rest of the system alone.

Several of the insects homeowners kill on sight are predators of the pests they are actually worried about. Removing them makes the underlying problem worse rather than better.

The species below are all common across Palm Beach County, Martin County, and St. Lucie County, and none of them warrant treatment.

Antlions

What you will see.

Conical pits roughly an inch across in dry, loose, sandy soil. Protected spots where rain does not reach: under eaves, beside foundations, beneath overhangs, in the lee of a wall.

What they eat.

Ants, primarily, along with other small insects that fall in.

Why leave them.

They are actively removing ants from the area immediately around your foundation. The adults, which look like slender damselflies with long wings, feed on nectar and pollen and are equally harmless.

Green lacewings

Why leave them.

Delicate pale green insects with large clear veined wings, usually noticed at night near lights. The larvae look completely different: small, flattened, alligator-shaped, and often overlooked entirely.

What they eat.

The larvae are aggressive predators of aphids, scale insects, mealybugs, whiteflies, and mite eggs.

Why leave them.

Aphids and scale produce the honeydew that ants farm, which is a significant driver of ant activity on landscape plants. Our carpenter ant guide covers how that honeydew relationship works. Lacewing larvae are working directly against that.

Assassin bugs and wheel bugs

What you will see.

Elongated bugs with a narrow head, a curved beak-like mouthpart, and often a distinctive raised cogwheel-shaped crest on the back in the case of wheel bugs. Usually on plants rather than structures.

What they eat.

Caterpillars, beetles, and other insects, which they pierce with that beak.

Why leave them.

They are effective predators of plant-damaging insects. One caution: they can deliver a painful defensive bite if handled, so observe rather than pick up. That is a reason not to touch them, not a reason to treat for them.

Mud daubers

What you will see.

Slender black or metallic blue wasps with a very thin waist, and small tubes of dried mud on walls, under eaves, or in sheltered corners.

Spiders. Each mud tube cell is provisioned with paralyzed spiders for the developing larva.

Why leave them.

Mud daubers are solitary and considerably less defensive than paper wasps or yellowjackets, since there is no colony to protect. Tubes in out-of-the-way spots are worth ignoring.

Spiders, mostly

What you will see.

Huntsman spiders on garage walls, wolf spiders at ground level after rain, golden silk orbweavers in large webs between shrubs.

Cockroaches, flies, mosquitoes, and other insects, in significant quantities.

Why leave them

As our guide on big Florida spiders covers, size and medical risk run in opposite directions here. The large dramatic ones are harmless and productive. Widow spiders are the group of medical significance, and those are small, so the ones worth removing are not the ones people react to.

Anoles and geckos

Not insects, but they belong on this list.

What you will see.

Brown and green anoles on walls and fences during the day, and Mediterranean house geckos around exterior lights after dark.

What they eat.

Roaches, crickets, small spiders, moths, and ants.

Why leave them.

A gecko population working your exterior lighting at night is removing a meaningful number of insects, including the flying species that draw spiders to the same area.

What this does not mean

Leaving beneficial species alone is not the same as leaving pest species alone. Subterranean termites cause structural damage and require treatment and monitoring. German cockroaches breed indoors and produce allergens documented as asthma triggers. Mosquitoes transmit disease. Roof rats gnaw electrical wiring. Fire ants sting aggressively and colonize open lawn. Bed bugs do not resolve on their own. None of those are on this list, and none of them should be tolerated because some insects are beneficial. The point is narrower. When a technician walks your property, part of the assessment is deciding what actually needs treating. A yard full of anoles, lacewings, and mud daubers is not a yard with a pest problem, and treating it as though it were makes the property less resilient rather than more.

How this affects treatment

Targeted treatment protects beneficial species as a side effect of being targeted.

UF/IFAS recommends integrated pest management, which selects the minimum effective treatment for the specific pest and applies it to specific locations rather than broadcasting across a property. Gel bait placed into cockroach harborage does not affect an antlion pit twenty feet away. A perimeter barrier along the foundation does not reach the lacewing larvae on your hibiscus.



Broadcast spraying across open lawn and landscape does the opposite. It reduces the predator population along with the pests, and the pests generally recover faster.


This is one of the practical arguments for IPM that has nothing to do with chemical exposure. It works better.

What usually turns out to matter

When a homeowner is concerned about insect activity in the yard, the useful sorting question is what the insect is doing rather than what it looks like.

Is it damaging the structure?

Termites, carpenter ants, and wood-boring beetles warrant attention.

Mosquitoes, German cockroaches, rodents, ticks, and fleas warrant attention.

Is it stinging or biting people using the yard?

Fire ants, paper wasps near doorways, and yellowjackets warrant attention.

Is it eating other insects and staying out of the way?

That is the list above, and it does not.

Most of what alarms people in a South Florida yard falls into the last category.
