Carpenter ants in Fort Pierce: what our technicians are finding right now

Large black ants walking across the kitchen counter after dark. Not the tiny translucent ghost ants that trail along grout lines in thin single-file lines, but something noticeably bigger, moving alone, and moving with purpose. That ant is probably a carpenter ant, and our technicians have been treating for them across Fort Pierce this month. The species tends to draw less attention than termites because it works more slowly, which is unfortunate, because carpenter ants are usually telling you something about your home that has nothing to do with ants.

The short version

Carpenter ants do not eat wood. They excavate it to build nesting galleries, which is a meaningful distinction because it changes both what the damage looks like and how fast it accumulates.

They strongly prefer wood that has already been softened by moisture. UF/IFAS Entomology documents Florida carpenter ants as nesting in wood weakened by decay or water damage rather than sound, dry lumber. A carpenter ant colony inside your wall is often a symptom of a leak, and treating the ants without finding the water leaves the underlying problem in place.

The two species most common in Fort Pierce homes are bicolored, with a reddish-brown head and thorax against a black abdomen, and they are large enough that most homeowners notice them individually rather than as a trail.

Foraging happens overnight. Seeing them during daylight in numbers usually means the colony has grown past what its current nesting space can hold.

Why Fort Pierce sees them consistently

Older housing stock is the biggest factor. The neighborhoods around downtown Fort Pierce, the historic district, and the streets running off Indian River Drive include a great deal of construction from the mid-twentieth century, much of it wood-framed with original trim, fascia, and window surrounds. Decades of coastal humidity and rain intrusion soften that wood in exactly the ways carpenter ants look for.

Mature tree canopy matters too. Carpenter ants nest readily in live trees, dead limbs, palm boots, and stumps, and a colony established in an oak twenty feet from the house will send foragers inside looking for food. Satellite nests then form indoors while the parent colony stays outside in the tree. Treating only what you find in the kitchen misses most of the population.

Fort Pierce also has an agricultural history that left mature citrus and other fruit trees on a lot of residential lots. Those trees support aphid and scale insect populations, which produce the honeydew carpenter ants feed on heavily. How to tell carpenter ants from termites

Both damage wood and both swarm, so the confusion is understandable. The evidence they leave behind separates them cleanly.

Carpenter ant frass

is coarse and fibrous, resembling pencil shavings, and it contains recognizable insect parts: discarded wings, leg segments, dead workers. The ants push it out of the gallery and it piles below the nest entrance.

consists of small, uniform, hexagonal pellets closer to coarse sand or ground pepper. No insect fragments.

differ under inspection. Carpenter ants leave smooth, clean-sanded galleries because they are cutting through wood rather than consuming it. Termite galleries look rougher and are frequently packed with soil and fecal material.

The insects themselves

are easy to separate once you know what to look for. Carpenter ants have a pinched waist, elbowed antennae, and front wings longer than the back pair when winged. Termites have a straight body with no waist, straight antennae, and four wings of roughly equal length that shed easily and pile up on windowsills.

Where they nest in Fort Pierce homes

Our technicians find carpenter ant activity in fairly predictable places, and almost all of them share a moisture history. Window and door frames on the weather-facing side of the house come up constantly, particularly where caulking has failed and rain has been wicking into the frame for a few seasons. Bathroom wall voids behind showers and tubs are another common find, usually tied to a slow supply line leak or failed grout. Attic framing near roof penetrations, especially around plumbing vents and old satellite dish mounts, shows up regularly. So does fascia and soffit wood along rooflines where gutters have been overflowing.

Hollow doors, wall voids behind dishwashers, and the wood immediately around laundry connections round out the list. Fort Pierce homes with enclosed porches added later, often with less weather sealing than the original structure, tend to have activity in that addition before anywhere else.

The pattern is consistent enough that finding carpenter ants gives our technicians a reasonable idea of where to look for water before opening anything up.

Why treatment has to address both the ants and the moisture

A carpenter ant colony can be eliminated. Bait works when the formulation matches what the colony is currently foraging for, and their preference shifts between carbohydrate and protein sources across the season, which is part of why store-bought bait sometimes gets ignored entirely. Direct treatment of located galleries handles the nest. UF/IFAS recommends integrated pest management that combines targeted treatment with correction of the conditions supporting the infestation. Leaving the moisture in place means the wood stays attractive and a new colony finds it eventually. The water damage also continues on its own, and wood-decay fungi cause structural problems independent of anything the ants are doing. Homeowners who fix the leak and treat the colony rarely see the problem return. Homeowners who only treat the colony often call again within a year or two.
