UF/IFAS documents the roof rat as the most common commensal rodent in residential attics across South Florida, with populations strongly associated with fruit trees and mature canopy that supply both food and travel routes to the roofline. If something is in your attic in Palm Beach County or the Treasure Coast, this is the likely species.
Norway rats occupy the opposite vertical zone. They burrow at ground level near foundations, under slabs, and along drainage structures, and they enter through low openings rather than the roofline.
Species determines treatment location, not just treatment product. Trapping for roof rats in a garage accomplishes very little when the population lives in the attic and travels through the canopy overhead.

Slender build, six to eight inches of body length, with a tail longer than the body. Large ears and prominent eyes. Fur ranges from brown to nearly black with a lighter underside. Pointed snout.

Overhead. Attics, soffit voids, ceiling cavities, palm crowns, and dense tree canopy. Excellent climbers that travel along branches, fence tops, and utility wires between properties.

Through the roofline almost exclusively. Overhanging tree branches within three feet of the roof provide the jump. Once on the roof, gaps in soffit panels, unsealed utility penetrations, plumbing vent gaps, and lifted roof tiles all provide entry.

Gnawed electrical wiring, chewed PVC plumbing, shredded insulation used for nesting, and contaminated attic space from droppings and urine. Damage accumulates for weeks before most homeowners notice the noise.

Ground level and below. Burrows along foundations, beneath slabs and sheds, in drainage structures, and near consistent food sources like dumpster areas and commercial kitchens.

Low openings. Gaps beneath garage doors, unsealed slab penetrations, crawl space vents, and utility conduit entries near ground level.

Structural gnawing at ground level, burrowing that undermines slabs and walkways, contaminated storage areas, and chewed wiring in low wall voids and utility rooms.
Native to Florida and ecologically valuable, though rarely a residential concern.

Wooded areas, hammocks, and preserve land. Builds large stick nests rather than occupying structures. More common in northern and central Florida than in Palm Beach County or the Treasure Coast.

Minimal. Wood rats occasionally shelter in outbuildings adjacent to preserve land but do not establish in occupied homes the way commensal species do.

Overhead in the ceiling or attic points to roof rats. Along baseboards, beneath floors, or in the garage at ground level points to Norway rats.

Roof rat droppings are roughly half an inch, spindle-shaped with pointed ends, and accumulate along ceiling joists and attic corners. Norway rat droppings are larger at three quarters of an inch, capsule-shaped with blunt ends, and appear along ground-level walls and in burrow entrances.

Gaps found at the soffit line, roof edge, or plumbing vents indicate roof rats. Gaps found under garage doors, at slab penetrations, or near crawl space vents indicate Norway rats.

Two to four inch holes along the foundation, under sheds, or near drainage structures indicate Norway rats. Roof rats do not burrow.

Roof rats travel along horizontal surfaces overhead. Traps belong on ceiling joists, along rafters, and at attic travel routes. Norway rats travel along ground-level walls, so traps belong along baseboards, in garages, and near burrow entrances.

Roof rat exclusion focuses on the roofline: soffit panels, roof tile gaps, plumbing vents, and fascia. Norway rat exclusion focuses on ground level: garage door seals, slab penetrations, and crawl space openings. Sealing the wrong elevation leaves the actual entry points open.

Only relevant for roof rats. Maintaining a three-foot gap between tree canopy and the roofline removes the primary travel route. Norway rats reach the structure across the ground regardless of tree cover.
